Pulling the majority of its attendees from France, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland, the show features such haute couture brands as Nina Ricci and Hugo Boss. In addition, pavilions featuring retail-inspired “green” items are showcased.

Trends from the show included variations of green – both the hue and the eco trend – textured metals, brushed silver and Scores of houseware items designed with sleek, smooth edges and whimsical shapes. Studies show that when the economy heads south, people nest, which is evident in the offerings from these European suppliers.

Guillaume Abou, the event director and the principal of 656Editions, is a staunch advocate of educating attendees of his show by encouraging suppliers, particularly those whose niche is textiles, to run training sessions on imprinting and decorating methods as well as technology applications. He moderated an interactive discussion on hot industry topics in the European marketplace with key professionals from top European suppliers like Inspirion, SOL’s and Senator. It’s important to note that at European ad specialty shows, education sessions simply aren’t held, so Abou’s endorsement and belief in their value is all the more impressive.

“We have to help exhibitors as much as we can,” says Abou.“It used to be that the ‘important’ companies – meaning the largest companies – were the ones that got the most attention and best service. The goal of my team and I is to make sure all our exhibitors, regardless of size, are treated like VIPs.” An early adopter of utilizing QR codes on plastic badges to allow for easy download of exhibitor information for attendees, Abou is passionate about making the trade show experience as efficient and easy as it is fruitful.

Another area in which the CTCO Show sets itself apart is its ability to adapt to the needs of its attendees and exhibitors. When something’s not working, it is fixed immediately. In addition, concierge-esque service is offered, from car pick-ups to a central meeting area serving coffee, beer and wine throughout the day where exhibitors can meet with clients and colleagues can catch up.

And Abou, who’s been known to help his exhibitors set up their booths, promotes a more hands-on, intimate interaction, eschewing the European standard of attendees making appointments to see their suppliers in favor of a more conversational approach. “Truth be told, building relationships is more important to me than making a profit,” Abou says. “But I hope we can do both.”

Next year’s CTCO Show in Lyon will be held from February 5-7.
